What to Expect in Your First Lesson
Your first ski or snowboard lesson at Ski Apache is all about having fun, learning a new skill, and gaining confidence on the slopes. Hereโs what you can expect from check-in to your first few runs.
Check-In
Whether youโre taking a group or private lesson, youโll first need to check-in at our Snow School office. Guests signed up for a private lesson should arrive 45 minutes before the lesson to pre-register. For group lessons, guests should arrive at the Snow School office at least 30 minutes prior to lesson time. Arriving early gives you time to complete any necessary paper, confirm your lesson details, and get directions to your meeting location.
Gear Rental
Ski Apache has all the equipment needed for ski and snowboard lessons including skis and ski poles, ski boots, snowboards, freestyle strap-in bindings, and helmets. Our rental team will make sure you have all the gear you need for your lesson and ensure everything fits you properly.ย
Learning the Basics
Your lesson will start in a beginner-friendly area designed specifically for new skiers and snowboarders. Your instructors will introduce themselves, explain safety guidelines, and go over basic mountain awareness. Theyโll also give you a rundown of your equipment and how to get in and out of it correctly.ย
From there, youโll start learning the fundamentals on flat ground. If youโre snowboarding, youโll find out if youโre regular or goofy (which foot forward), proper stance and positioning, shifting your weight while staying balanced, turning, stopping, and gliding. Throughout your lesson, your instructor will demonstrate each step before giving you time to practice while giving guidance the entire time. Youโll work on small movements first and gradually build up to controlled glides and turns. As the lesson progresses, your instructor will show you how to link simple movements together.
At the end of your lesson, if you feel ready to take the next step, you can move on beginner-friendly terrain and start practicing your new skills at your own pace. Or, if youโd like a bit more guided practice, feel free to take another private or group lesson to continue sharpening your skills before getting out on the slopes on your own.

Snowboarding & Skiing Tips for Beginners
1. Arrive Early
Give yourself plenty of time before your lesson begins. Arriving early gives you time to check-in, get properly fitted for equipment, and meet your instructor without feeling rushed.
2. Dress in Warm Layers
If itโs your very first time on the mountain, you want to make sure you arrive dressed appropriately. Dress in layers so you can adjust throughout the day as temperatures change. Start with a thin, moisture-wicking base layer. Then add a mid layer such as a wool sweater, fleece, or puffy vest. For your outer layer, opt for a waterproof jacket and snow pants or a snow bib. Donโt forget warm socks (avoid cotton), gloves, and goggles.
3. Bring Water and Snacks
Skiing and snowboarding is incredibly fun, but itโs also quite the workout. If itโs your first time snowboarding or skiing, you may be surprised at how much energy it takes. Pack plenty of water and some snacks to have on hand to maintain your energy. And donโt be afraid to take breaks as needed.
4. Ask Questions
Donโt be afraid to ask a lot of questions. Our instructors are here to support you and make sure you feel comfortable every step of the way. If something seems unclear or you need extra guidance, ask away! Clear communication helps you learn faster and build confidence.
5. Have Fun
Most importantly, enjoy the entire experience and keep a positive attitude. Everyone starts as a beginner and learning to snowboard or ski takes time. The more you practice, the better youโll get. Focus on the small wins and remember that learning is just another part of the adventure.ย
