No mountain trip is complete without spending time on the trail. At Ski Apache, there’s more than just skiing or snowboarding. You can also go on a gondola ride that takes you to the very top of the Sierra Blancas at an elevation of nearly 11,500 feet. The Quickest Route to Ski Apache From El Paso, Texas

The most direct route from El Paso to Ruidoso, New Mexico is a 136 mile drive, which typically takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes depending on traffic and weather conditions. If you want a straight shot to Ruidoso, first start on I-10 E then take exit 22B and merge onto US-54 toward Alamogordo, New Mexico. Stay on US-54 E for 64 miles and then turn right onto US-54/Charlie Lee Memorial Relief Route. Use the left lanes to get onto US-70 and continue for 42 miles. Make another left onto Mescalero Trail. Finally, turn left onto NM-48/Billy the Kid Trail/Sudderth Drive. This will put you in the heart of Midtown Ruidoso.

Taking the Scenic Route From El Paso to Ruidoso

White Sands National Park  

White Sands National Park is one of the world’s most unusual landscapes right along your route to Ruidoso. Stretching 275 square miles of glistening gypsum dunes, this natural wonder looks otherworldly. The contrast of bright blue sky and white sand makes it a photographer’s dream (especially during sunrise and sunset) and a must-see stop for anyone driving through southern New Mexico. This route adds only 23 miles to the trip and is well worth it. Start on I-10 W for 31 miles then keep right for I-25 N. Take exit 6 and merge onto US-70 and continue for 48 miles. Make a left onto Dunes Drive at White Sands National Park. 

After your visit, get back on US-70 E for 13 miles before taking a slight right onto US-54 N. Turn left on US-54/Charlie Lee Memorial Relief Route and continue for 5 miles. Use the left lanes to turn onto US-70 E and continue for 42 miles. Make a left onto Mescalero Trail and then another left onto NM-48 N to Ruidoso.

McGinn’s PistachioLand 

If you’re looking for a fun, quirky roadside stop on your drive from El Paso to Ruidoso, you can’t skip McGinn’s PistachioLand in Alamogordo, New Mexico. This family-owned pistachio farm is famous for its iconic roadside landmark, the World’s Largest Pistachio, standing 30 feet tall. Guests can take a guided farm tour to see how the nuts are grown, harvested, and roasted, and browse the shop for souvenirs and snacks for the rest of your drive. This stop doesn’t add any more time to your drive since it’s located along the way.   

To visit PistachioLand, start on 1-10 E and continue for 95 miles. Then, take exit 22B for US-54 E and continue for 84 miles. Turn right onto US-54/Charlie Lee Memorial Relief Road and continue for 5 miles. Get on US-54 for 3.9 miles then make a left at PistachioLand. 

From PistachioLand, continue onto US-54 E/US 70 E for another 38 miles toward Ruidoso. Turn left onto Mescalero Trail and then make another left onto NM-48.

What To Expect When Visiting Cities at Higher Elevations

The average elevation of El Paso is 3,740 feet above sea level while Ruidoso’s elevation is 6,400 feet at its lowest. Ski Apache, which is located in Alto just outside of Ruidoso, has an even higher altitude. Ski Apache elevation at its base is 9,600 feet and climbs to an impressive 11,400 feet. The peak itself reaches well over 12,000 feet. This is quite the jump in elevation if you’re used to the flatlands of West Texas. 

Texans often notice the difference as soon as they step out of the car. The air feels cooler and fresher, but thinner. You’ll also notice the temperature drop the higher into the mountains you go. Temperatures in Ruidoso are consistently 15 to 20 degrees below El Paso temperatures, and even cooler at Ski Apache. Compared to El Paso, mountain towns definitely have more unpredictable weather. One minute the sun is shining and the next minute it’s snowing.  

These dramatic changes in elevation and climate can catch tourists off guard if they’re not prepared. And no one wants to have altitude sickness while on a ski vacation.
